Italian TV program “Voyager” follows Michelangelo’s David travel

A commemoration of the debate sparked in 1504 in Florence to decide the placement of Michelangelo’s David was organized during “Florens 2010-Week of Cultural and Environmental Heritage”, an event that took place in Florence from 12th to 20th November. The celebration over the dispute of Buonarroti’s masterpiece is the brainchild of Italian art critic Sergio Risaliti, who reconstructed the story through historical sources.
The huge block of marble arrived in Florence from the quarries of Carrara in 1464 and was first carved on commission by Agostino di Duccio and Antonio Rossellino and finally by Michelangelo Buonarroti, who completed the statue in 1503. Then Gonfaloniere Pier Sederini wanted it out of the cathedral, arguing that the work, rather than a religious symbol, was an emblem for the Florentine Republic. It was therefore appointed a committee of experts to decide the location of David.
Young provided a ten technicians’ crew to the TV program which was composed of camera operators, assistants and steady men. Young cameras filmed all the steps of the delicate transport of the statue from the roof of the Cathedral to the churchyard, from different angles including a basket of 25 meters mounted in the centre of the road that runs alongside Florence’s Cathedral.
